Rationalization: The Art of Finding The Perfect Excuse

We all know what rationalization is…. don’t we?

It is the act of fooling one’s self with false excuses for not doing something extraordinary with one’s life.
It gives you the reason to believe that it is alright to be a nobody… someone replaceable…ordinary…
Because I was born poor…
Because I am not good at it..
Because I don’t have WHAT IT TAKES…
Because I am not talented enough…
Because I have always been shy..ugly…dumb et al.
Because I am not a university graduate…
Because I never had the schooling that she did…
Because I am not good looking…
Because my boss wouldn’t let me…
Because I don’t deserve it…
Because my Dad/Mother/Uncle/Grandpa etc…said so…
Because that’s not what people usually do…
Because I have always been told I could never be good at it…
Because my teacher told me I was not cut out for it…
Because…
Because…

You can fill in YOUR ‘becauses’ and think of all the rationalizations your lizard brain can come up with.

Lizard brain is the name Seth Godin used in his blog and books highlighting the fact that this is a very old phenomenon..Old as in prehistoric times. When we were in stone age where the survival was of the fittest. Whoever killed it ate it..
Man was always on the lookout for enemies, predators… Animals which were after his life.
He would be extra careful of his movements. And the part of brain that would aid him to do so was The Amygdala aka The Lizard Brain. But times have changed, haven’t they?

Since the lizard brain is highly cautious and wants to shield us from any attacks from predators, it takes extra care and guards us from dangers of any new idea, endeavor, career, business, friendship, love. relationship before we even begin to give it a serious thought! Giving us a bunch of reasons (read excuses) for NOT doing it..
Because….
Because…
Get it?

I am reading Seth Godin’s new book “Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?’. Already half way through and love every word of it. If you pick it up and start reading, chances are you may not want to continue… Guess why?
Your Lizard Brain!
It doesn’t want you to become a linchpin… become extraordinary …outstanding!
Because thats what it knows…

So, its time now to quiet our lizard brains and start being extraordinary…

Have an extraordinary life!

Thanks to those who disagreed with the theory of lizard brain, thanks for your comments.
The theory of 'lizard brain' is actually an anatomical fact. The only difference is that instead of using the word 'Amygdala', Seth Godin uses a layman's term 'Lizard Brain' to make people understand it better.
For more information on 'amygdala' which is a part of the human brain, you could use this Wikipedia link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amygdala .
    Hope this helps.
    Have a remarkable life.

Rationalization, psychoanalytic theory, a defense mechanism whereby people attempt to hide their true motivations and emotions by providing reasonable or self-justifying explanations for irrational or unacceptable behavior. To me the You are the answer of all your problems, the solutions has to come from within, but the mind builds barriers or demolishes them. The only free person is he whose unshackled within.Know your self, Take time to think,Use good judjment, Make plans, Be optimistic, Talk like a winner, Give your self to your task, Learn to say no,Amend your faults,Get up when knocked down.Nothing succeeds like success, these are these few healthy mind exercises that we can do as our daily workout!!!! than there is nothing that we cannot achieve. It is my sincere prayers to my Lord,Oh Lord! Let me rule this mind,to think of this life as school, and give me strenght to try my best to stand each test, and do my work and nothing shirk!!!!!!!God Bless You!!! Nuru for sharing such a motivational thoughts,Keep posting, He who so is wise will observe these thoughts:-)..

I disagree with your theory of lizard brain. The people you are projecting your theories onto are not filled with the fears you would have as so-called civilized people today. Observe the native people's of the present and you will not see the behavior of living in fear of predators . Yes, you would live in fear of those things if you went back in time to prehistoric eras. But you can't make that assumption about the actual living people of that time. Our fears come out of a system of false beliefs about ourselves and our place in the scheme of nature. We seem to abhor the natural process and the incredible sense it makes to obey nature. This is our dilemma. We will either destroy ourselves and the world around us or we will get back on track with the natural world. There's no other choices.
