Do People Laugh at Your Dreams?

My favorite quote by one of my gurus, Robin Sharma:

“If people are not laughing at your dreams at least once a week, you are aiming too low!”

Another one of my heroes, Henry Ford said:

“If I’d have asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”

Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook because he knew it would work. In his mind.

Or did Sergey Brin and Larry Page (Google founders) ran from pillar to post to see if their idea of ‘downloading the internet on their computer’ is ‘really workable’? No, they just went ahead and created it.

Wright Brothers knew they would create a machine that would make them fly…And they did it! In spite of people calling them names…

When Sony launched its Walkman – which is to date the highest selling consumer electronics product in history (iPod has yet to catch up!) – there was hardly any market research when it was created. It was something that one of the founders of Sony, Masaru Ibuka, created for himself first because he wanted to listen to symphonies on long-haul flights. And rest, as we all know, is history.

I could go on and on with more examples, but now, lets talk about you and me.
Our problem is, even if we have a brilliant idea/thought/plan, we don’t follow through.

First we ask people who are closer to us to ‘have their opinion’ because they are OLDER, RICHER, SMARTER, WISER, EXPERIENCED etc (all in our minds, though!). And what do they tell us, in all their ******* wisdom?

‘No way!’
‘It will never work!’
‘You must be out of your ******** mind!’
‘Remember that guy? He tried it and failed. So its better you don’t try it. Learn from his experience!’
‘You have a cushy job, why would you want leave and do this crazy thing?’
‘We are in recession’
‘This is Pakistan, it won’t work here!’
‘How could anyone in our family do THAT!’
Et al.

Wow, what wise opinions…Not a single person thinks that we could be right!

And we believe them!

And we start thinking since everyone is saying it wont work, then IT WONT WORK!

And we leave the idea/project/business/product etc and go back to our favorite place:
The STATUS QUO!

You would be delighted to know that even the most intelligent and so-called ‘wise men’ of their fields have been proven wrong at times. And we take someone’s opinion seriously who doesn’t even KNOW what we are talking about….

Guess who said this in 1983:

“The Internet? We are not interested in it!”

You won’t believe it, but, it was……..Bill Gates!

Hope you will take your dreams and ideas seriously, even if people laugh at them or YOU.
In fact, you should ENSURE that people laugh at your dreams…

Never forget that its YOUR LIFE that we are talking about, not someone else’s and …You only live once!

Steve Jobs couldn’t have said it better than this:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.

Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice.

And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.

They somehow already know what you truly want to become.

Everything else is secondary.”

Dare to dream.

Agreed. KNOW what you want. Your Expectations and Intentions are key. See it. Feel it. Vividly envision your success. Don’t give up. Never give up. Don’t accept as fact what others (including the experts) say. Stop being reasonable, given the stats against you. Reach for the unimaginable. You will fall. It happens. But get back up with pure determination. Keep stretching, and proving every one else wrong. Revel it that. Believe in the power of your thoughts and the laws of attraction. As yet uncodified realities that if you’re open enough to now, you can reap the benefits of such knowledge. The skeptics and the naysayers will still be looking for proof, while you’re living your chosen destiny! Never underestimate what you can accomplish…

Excellent ideas put together. Few of my thoughts on your article.

1. If you are a versatile person, having worked in the 9.00 to 5.00 job, you cannot get space for test, experiment and apply what you want to do. The only time then you get is the time available with you in night or on weekends. Having just started working on and implementing some of the ideas I dream about, I struggle with balancing with the time I have to give to my family. So in my own point of view, becoming your own boss is the only solution or joining a job which is aligned with your dreams (tough though)

2. Most of the people would say that west has an enabling environment which provide avenues for you to flourish. Is it an excuse or a reality when compared to Pakistan.

  Yes, work-life balance is an everyday challenge for all of us. But…no pains no gains!
  
  You have asked a question that all of us keep asking ourselves when faced with the extremely ‘positive’ environment in our beloved country. Yet, it is my belief (and experience) that if one wants to do something in life then no matter what the circumstances are, no matter how disturbing the environment is, no matter how little avenues we see, one would succeed.
  We Pakistanis have it in us, we are fighters. But, only those succeed who have their eyes on the target and are not bogged down by circumstances or people who belittle them.
  
  I know this sounds like a age old, worn out ‘cassette’…But this is what I feel and believe.
